Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Rhonda Williams

Article and Photography by Madeline Landis; Student Life

This teacher spotlight is my amazing Fashion & Interior Design teacher, Mrs. Williams! She is super crafty, sweet and engaging. Her lessons are fun, and super informative. This has got to be one of my favorite elective courses yet, and one of my favorite teachers here at Agora. I hope you have the chance of taking her Fashion & Interior Design class. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

I hope you enjoy our interview!

Q: What made you want to be a teacher?

A: Well, I’ve always wanted to be a teacher since the 4th grade! Ha-ha! A couple of things were happening for me at the time. My dad was actually a teacher and he always had such wonderful stories to tell about the students and some of the teachers. It seemed like he was always doing something quirky and fun! So it really engaged me. He would also have his students come out to our 78-acre farm for a hayride cookout. It was always really fun to see the relationships that they had with my dad. Also, I had a lot of problems with my ears when I was little, so sometimes after I went to my doctor appointments, I would get to watch my dad teach! One of my fourth grade teachers also really inspired me because she had been all around the world! It was just really amazing, the way that she talked about it. So, those were really the two people that made me want to teach.

Q: What thing(s) do you like the most about being a teacher at Agora?

A: I think for me, even when I was a student, I was always drawn to alternative educational environments. Just creating spaces that made more sense for students to learn in. I love that being at Agora allows teachers and the students to have flexibility in terms of taking control of your education. It’s really wonderful to have leadership that ends up trickling down from the teachers to the students, it just creates a nice invested atmosphere!

Q: Have you always wanted to teach Fashion & Interior Design?

A: No. Ha-ha! I didn’t know that would be an option to teach, but I kind of already had grown a love for that kind of stuff. After designing multiple rooms in various houses that I moved in and out of, I decided I really had a knack for that sort of thing. On more of the fashion side, I also enjoy having fun with colors and accents with my clothing. I really enjoyed finding more creativity and a sense of freeness that shows and expresses who I am. I really noticed the creativity that I had. I also teach music courses, and teaching those two classes together, they really give me so much creative freedom!

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A: So I love to read, I do write a little bit, like journal and things like that. I also really love doing the meditational drawing! And then the family and I are really outdoorsy, so we do a lot of hiking and camping.

Q: What is your all-time favorite place to go?

A: I’d have to say either my home or my parents’ home. Actually, I really love the river right behind my home. My family and I spend a lot of quality time down there. Sometimes, I just go down there by myself to relax and go tubing!

Q: Do you have any words of wisdom that you would like to share?

A: So for this moment, take care of yourself. Breathe deep. Stretch. Exercise. Drink Water. Eat well. Just practice self-care throughout this time. ☺

Fun Fact: (Mrs. William’s favorite birds are Blue Herons!)
